Catman Cohen is the mysterious, controversial creator of the music trilogy, "The Catman Chronicles," a collection of songs that have themes related to life, death, and dreams. Described as Post-Decadence Rock, Cohen's songs spring from a foundation of social activism, primarily in calling for a resurrection of neglected heroes (e.g., nurses, paramedics, teachers, firemen, universal peace-keepers, environmentalists, human rights activists, animal rights activists, etc.); a plea for assistance to those without adequate food or health care; and a cry for urgent remedial efforts to preclude an imminent fresh water crisis.

Very little is known about Catman Cohen. To date, his only publicity consists of shadow photos and his official bio excludes data such as birthdate, birthplace, and other personal details. He believes artists MUST step into the background in order that society can shift its spotlight onto various key vocations (especially nursing) that are in crisis. He turns down interviews, instead requesting that a list of social activist friends be considered in his place, stating that they have more urgent things to say about the world than anything he might offer.

Cohen's extremely deep, bullfrog singing voice has drawn comparisons to various artists, particularly Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, and Barry White. It is that strange unusual singing voice that forms the fulcrum within his CD's, featuring guest performances by she-males, Goths, and other atypical entertainers.

After witnessing the inspiring heroics of the firemen, police, nurses, and paramedics following the 9/11 World Trade Center disaster, Catman had high hopes that the country would change its priorities and honor the heroes it truly needs at this critical point in time. Having been apprised previously of critical shortages in personnel and materials within various key, service sectors, Catman hoped that the new, substantive heroes of 9/11 would supplant the current, vacuous heroes forming the Cult of Celebrity. As his song, A Prayer for America states, Catman hoped the nation would change "from the shallow to the profound".

To that effect, Catman's main inspiration for his new CD is his desire to be "a brick in the wall" toward enhancing the positive perceptions of vital infrastructure workers. Catman firmly believes that, "for those children who wish to be the guardians and caretakers of our society, they need to know that when they obtain their positions, they will be highly esteemed and paid more than a mere subsistence wage".

Ultimately, he hopes to establish his own foundation, to be called "A Prayer for America Foundation". Its primary goal will be the creation and support of programs designed to raise the celebrity and esteem for service workers (firemen, teachers, nurses, police, paramedics, soldiers, etc) throughout the world - the kinds of heroes that we truly need at this time. Eventually, Catman sees a day where this kind of foundation will be opened in every nation, under the name of each country where it is based. A Prayer for America... a Prayer for the World.

In order to effect his dream, Catman plans to donate 20% of all net profits from sales of HOW I WANT TO DIE to American and Canadian service organizations. However, in order to make the most impact, Catman intends to begin with the two organizations listed below in the field of nursing.

It is estimated that today, some 126,000 nursing positions in hospitals throughout the USA are unfilled, and the nursing profession is retiring and shrinking at twice the rate of other occupations. In California, some 50% of the nursing workforce has to be imported from outside the state to make up the shortages.

Canada is in the grip of a serious shortage of registered nurses that by all accounts will grow worse in years to come. The most comprehensive national study, published by the Canadian Nurses Association, predicts a shortage in Canada (except Quebec) of as many as 113,000 nurses by 2011. In Quebec, nurses are often imported from France to make up the current shortage.

Catman will select two more service organizations every year with the CD proceeds to be divided equally amongst them. Furthermore, he requests that any like-minded individuals contact him at the following address in order to volunteer ideas or services for his "A Prayer for America Foundation":

“In the 21st century, all major wars will be water wars.”
- Ismail Serageldin, vice president for environmental affairs, World Bank

After spending several years in the desert, Catman came to develop a profound appreciation for the developing scarcity of water. He watched as hundreds of thousands of newcomers arrived to settle in America’s last frontier.

One day, Catman stumbled upon a book entitled “Water” by Marq de Villiers, winner of Canada’s Governor General Award for literary excellence. De Villiers presented a litany of alarming facts about the world water situation in a most compelling and erudite manner. He presented disturbing info concerning the plummeting level of the Dead Sea; the expanding Sahara desert; the disintegrating Nile River; and the slowly developing water troubles in the USA.

Most interestingly, de Villiers noted that there are only six major options for obtaining water supply: import… manufacture (from ocean water)… conservation (mainly through pricing)… improving efficiency of distribution… population decrease… or stealing (either through opportunistic profiteers who obtain water rights for only a fraction of their true value…. or through actual WAR).

Today more than half of the world’s rivers are so polluted they pose serious health risks… and a child dies every eight seconds from drinking contaminated water. Various studies have found that the Ogallala Aquifer lying beneath six Great Plains states will run dry by the year 2020, imperiling US agriculture and, hence, grain exports to all variety of nations. Although the optimists insist that improved technology will solve all ills, Catman feels that the first step toward a substantive solution lies through water education.

To that effect, Catman plans to donate 20% of all net profits from his CD sales (HOW I WANT TO LIVE) for the benefit of two WATER organizations whose primary goals are education and prevention of privatization (whereby water goes only to those who can afford it rather than those who need it):

The Pacific Institute is dedicated to protecting our natural world, encouraging sustainable development, and improving global security.

Founded in 1987 and based in Oakland, California, we provide independent research and policy analysis on issues at the intersection of development, environment, and security.

Our aim is to find real-world solutions to problems like water shortages, habitat destruction, global warming, and environmental terrorism. We conduct research, publish reports, recommend solutions, and work with decision makers, advocacy groups, and the public to change policy.

"It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish." - Mother Teresa

As the Catman’s journey came to an end, he finally realized what is truly impressive in this sadly distressed world.

At one time, like so many others, he thought that massive mansions on expansive estates are awe-inspiring. He once believed that the accumulation of things for purposes of ostentatious display mattered. Slowly but surely, he allowed possessions to dictate the way he lived, and he became a slave to inanimate objects rather than the master of his own fate.

Hiding behind high gates, he ignored the collective agonies of those without adequate food, shelter, and health care…..36 million Americans struggling with hunger….700,000 children going to bed hungry every night…..and some 50 million Americans without health insurance, many forced to endure weeks of endless pain.

How could this be? What had gone wrong with a society that allows a handful of plutocrats to live in 200 room palaces while others are lucky to find a park bench at night? In a land of plenty, it did not make sense, and any sensitive person could not help but feel ashamed.

The Universe would not allow the Catman to continue down his oblivious path. One day, his world simply fell apart, and that began a slow trek toward enlightenment. In his depths of despair, he was lucky to discover a new world of altruists and activists who are determined to become rich, not through the accumulation of frivolous stuff, but rather the resuscitation of hopes and dreams.

It had taken many years but eventually the epiphany finally reached Catman: those who are impressed by the material things of this world are generally not impressive people…..the true flowers of humanity reside in the darkest corners of the world, striving to heal its pain.

And with this final chronicle, the true identity of Catman Cohen can be revealed…..just a long lost soul who died in spirit years ago, then was resurrected, and finally found his dream.

Some 20% of all profits from sales of HOW I WANT TO DREAM will be donated to two charities whose primary aims are the alleviation of suffering in all parts of the world. Click either of the links below to visit these charities' sites.

The Gesundheit! Institute is a home-based hospital founded by Dr. Hunter "Patch" Adams in 1972, located outside of Hillsboro in rural West Virginia.

The Institute states its vision as being dedicated to revolutionizing health care delivery by replacing what the Institute sees as greed and competition with generosity and compassion. Creation of Gesundheit! Institute was a topic of the 1998 movie Patch Adams starring Robin Williams. Since the 1970s, the Gesundheit Institute has treated over 15,000 patients without payment, medical insurance or formal facilities. One of the continued missions of the Gesundheit! Institute involves the concept of Humanitarian clowning. The project uses the theme of laughter as an integral element of effective doctoral care. In the past, the Gesundheit! Institute has taken clowns into the war zones in Bosnia, refugee camps in the Republic of Macedonia, as well as South African AIDS orphanages. In October 2007, Patch Adams and the Gesundheit Board unveiled its campaign to raise $1 million dollars towards building a Teaching Center and Clinic on its land in West Virginia. The Center and Clinic will enable Gesundheit to see patients and teach health care design. The Gesundheit! Institute was recently featured in an interview of Patch Adams, conducted by Greater Good Science Center. Adams has been raising money for the Institute for nearly three decades, and his goal is to open a 40-bed hospital in rural West Virginia that offers free, holistic health care to anyone who wants it.

After working as a registered nurse in emergency rooms throughout the United States, Mary Lightfine, a woman who thrives on challenges, decided to join an organization called Doctors Without Borders. That decision has changed her life. Since then she has lived and worked in more than a dozen countries, including some of the most hellish spots on earth. Mary was ambushed and shot at in Somalia and delivered babies in the jungles of Sri Lanka. Mary traveled through perilous Afghani Mountains infested with land mines by jeep, foot and Donkey to reach isolated inhabitants. She brought food to starving refugees by plane in south Sudan, after their villages and crops were destroyed by northern government alliances. She was also one of the first to provide medical aid to Kosovar refugees who had experienced unthinkable horrors. Mary, a seasoned veteran of the Nobel Prize winning organization Doctors Without Borders began sharing her moving stories with students across the United States in 2000. After hearing about her experiences numerous students wanted to spend their time helping others abroad but couldn't find organizations that would accept them into their programs. Most medical volunteer organizations accept only licensed professionals with a minimum of two years prior experience. In collaboration with medical professionals and communities south of the border Mary Lightfine is now able to provide the "opportunity of a lifetime" to others through the founding of Volunteers Without Boundaries Inc., a non profit charity organization.
